Boys basketball: Mesa routs A.B. Miller

MISSION VIEJO - Costa Mesa High senior Nate Jones scored a

game-high 27 points and added 13 rebounds to lead the Mustangs to a 73-47

boys basketball victory over A.B. Miller in first-round pool play at the

Trabuco Hills Tournament.

Jones scored 17 in the first half, as the Mustangs built a 33-18 lead.

Advancing the Mesa cause against the Rebels were seniors Ryan Naff (14

points and 13 rebounds) and Rick Hatsushi (nine points and nine assists).

Senior Ryan Ferryman and 6-foot-6 junior Mike Payne added six points

apiece for the winners.

First-year coach Bob Serven’s Mustangs, attempting to end a streak of 17

straight nonwinning seasons at the school, improved to 6-2. The Mustangs

won just seven games the last two seasons o7 combinedf7 and have not

won more than six in one campaign since the 1992-93 squad finished 11-11.

Mesa, which had six three-pointers from four different players to drop

A.B. Miller to 2-6, concludes pool play today, when it squares off

against former Pacific Coast League rival Laguna Hills at 4 p.m. at

Trabuco Hills High.

If victorious, the Mustangs would advance to the championship semifinals

12-team tournament.
