More than $20,000 in toys collected
Students at Orange Coast College have collected more than 3,000 gifts for
needy and abused children this holiday season.
Gifts were donated to the Associated Student College Life Office’s 15th
annual Angel Tree Project. In just three weeks, more than $20,000 worth
of presents ranging in price from $1 to $200 were collected.
The toys will be distributed to several Orange County human service
agencies this season.
Lincoln Elementary trying literacy library
Lincoln Elementary School is trying out a new approach to promoting
literacy. They have installed a “literacy library” that stocks series of
books and labels them according to reading level. Each level is then
divided into smaller groups so that readers may gradually increase the
difficulty of the material they read. The library is stocked with four to
six copies of more than 800 titles.
OCC speech team wins fall championships
Orange Coast College’s speech and debate team won the Fall
Championship tournament at Cal State Long Beach. A total of 37 colleges
and universities competed, including last year’s tournament winners --
the South Orange County Community College District. The victory was the
halfway point in their season, which resumes in February.
Schools donate toys and gifts to FISH
Students, parents and faculty members at Lincoln Elementary School are
overflowing with holiday spirit this year.
They are reaching out to families in need by donating toys and other
gifts to the Friends in Service to Humanity organization. The Harbor
chapter of the organization serves underprivileged families in Costa
Mesa, Newport Beach and Irvine. Although students give to the
organization all year long they have planned something special for the
holiday season. They doubled the amount of gifts they normally collect by
installing a giving tree in their library. This year they will provide
presents for more than 140 children.
Fashion students make clothes for abused children
Fashion students at Orange Coast College put their expertise to good
use this holiday to help abused children.
Students made nightgowns, blankets, pillows and pillow cases for the
children living at Orangewood Children’s home in Orange. All of he fabric
was donated by OCC students.
