MILLENNIUM MOMENT

The Albert Schweitzer of Balboa Island might have been an appropriate

title for retired Marine Corps Col. Horace S. Mazet, a man who divided

his time between his bayfront home and trips to East Africa.

Mazet, a fellow of the Royal Geographic Society and a life member of the

Wild Life Society of East Africa, wrote five books about his experiences

in Africa and elsewhere. He also contributed extensively to “Sports

Illustrated,” “The Saturday Evening Post,” and “Natural History” on the

subject of animal conservation.

During trips in 1955 and 1957, Mazet filmed footage that was used in the

“Tarzan” movies. He also worried (accurately) that the encroaching forces

of civilization would destroy the very habitat he was filming.

* MILLENNIUM MOMENT celebrates the people who have made a major

contribution to the Newport-Mesa community during this century.
