Zuniga, Bottom top coaches’ All-PCL football

Costa Mesa High junior C.J. Zuniga and Corona del Mar High senior

Jay Bottom, who helped their teams share the Pacific Coast League title,

have been chosen offensive and defensive players of the year,

respectively, by the circuit’s coaches.

Zuniga, a 5-10, 185-pound running back, rushed for 868 yards and scored

12 touchdowns in four league games.

Bottom, a 6-3, 220-pound tackle, dominated in the trenches, helping the

Sea Kings allow a league-low 33 points.

Costa Mesa seniors Shaun Ferryman and Dave Weir repeat selections on the

first team, which includes nine Mustangs, eight Sea Kings and five

Estancia Eagles.

Mesa and Estancia have six players each on the second team, which

includes four CdM standouts.

Ferryman was a first-team tight end as a junior, but was honored at wide

receiver this fall.

Weir, a first-team safety last season, was honored as an outside

linebacker.

The first-team offensive line was an All-Newport-Mesa contingent of CdM

seniors Sean Fenton, Jason Kurtz and Brandon Johnson, Estancia senior

Kyle Westman and Mesa junior Luther Mitchell.

First-team tight end Willy Franco (Mesa) and fullback Mike Hayes (CdM)

were also recognized primarily for their blocking prowess.

Estancia senior Marshall Hendricks was a first-team pick, after rushing

for 476 yards and scoring six TDs in league. He rushed for 240 yards and

scored three TDs in the Eagles’ league-opening win over cross-town rival

Mesa.

Mustang junior Luis Avalos was the first-team place-kicker.

Mesa senior inside linebacker Jason Rankin was a first-team honoree on

defense, after earning second-team laurels last season.

He is joined on the first team by fellow linebackers Matt Mueller

(Estancia), Nick Prosser (CdM) and Andy Romo (Estancia).

Romo and Prosser are junior outside ‘backers, while Mueller is a senior

middle ‘backer.

The first-team defensive line includes Estancia junior end David

Rodriguez and Mesa junior tackle Antony Grubisich.

CdM safeties Adam Cooper, a senior, and Eric Snell, a junior, were

first-team picks in the secondary, as was Mesa senior cornerback Jake

Cleveland.

Second-team picks from Costa Mesa are: Senior offensive guard Eliseo

Martinez; junior offensive tackle Charlie Amburgey, senior defensive end

Todd Duddridge, senior defensive tackle Fernando Aronna and senior

cornerback Greg Stewart.

Representing Estancia on the second team are: Senior running back Sean

Freeman; junior offensive tackle Robert Aguilera; junior guard Cesar

Romero; senior place-kicker John Alderete; junior flex linebacker Fahad

Jahid and senior nose guard Josh Veach.

Senior tailback Grant Estabrook, junior outside ‘backer Blake Hacker,

senior defensive end Travis Hackett and junior cornerback Charlie

Alshuler were second-team picks from CdM.
