REPORT CARD
TODAY, TOMORROW AND BEYOND
Ashley Davis of Huntington Beach was one of 12 winners chosen from almost
1,000 entries in the Affordable Housing Management Assn.’s 1999 AHMA
Drug-Free Kid poster calendar contest.
Posters are submitted annually by children in kindergarten through high
school who reside in association-member complexes throughout the Pacific
Southwest region, which includes Southern California, Arizona and
Southern Nevada.
The contest, now in its 13th year, is designed to encourage young
residents of affordable housing to stay away from drugs by using a
drug-free theme as the contest’s central message.
Winning posters were selected based on each participant’s originality,
quality and overall artistic ability in interpreting the contest theme,
“Today, Tomorrow and Beyond -- AHMA Drug-Free Kid.”
Ashley, 14, said the theme means that no matter what day or time it is,
she will be drug-free.
FASHION STUDENTS LIFT SPIRITS OF ORANGEWOOD CHILDREN
Orange Coast College fashion students have generated some Christmas cheer
this holiday season for abused youngsters living at Orangewood Children’s
Home in Orange.
Students enrolled in the college’s beginning construction techniques
class volunteered several hours this month -- after completing the final
exam -- to making nightgowns, blankets, pillows and pillowcases for the
kids. The students worked together in the college’s Clothing Lab.
One student who worked on the project was Celine Ouaknine of Huntington
Beach, an 18-year-old first-semester Orange Coast College fashion major.
“I wanted to do this because I thought it was important,” Ouaknine said,
while working on two pillows for the Orangewood kids. “I wish I could do
more.”
The Marina High School graduate enrolled at OCC this year to pursue a
career in fashion.
“I’ve wanted to work in the fashion industry for as long as I can
remember,” she said. “My dad owns a clothing company, and I’ve worked for
him for quite a while. I love the business. I plan to earn an OCC fashion
certificate and eventually become a fashion sales representative.”
Karen Lundie of Huntington Beach also worked on a nightgown for
Orangewood residents. For the past several semesters, Lundie has been
taking OCC fashion, food science and culinary arts classes.
“I’ve been sewing for 35 years and decided to come back to Coast to brush
up on my techniques,” she said. “I’m having lots of fun.”
Lundie said she plans to earn fashion and culinary arts certificates,
along with an associate’s degree.

GRADUATING IN IDAHO
Jennifer Phyllis Waddell of Huntington Beach participated in the
University of Idaho’s 1999 December commencement ceremonies this month.
She earned her bachelor’s degree.
OCC’S SPEECH TEAM WINS FALL CHAMPS TITLE
Orange Coast College’s speech and debate team reached the midway point of
its 1999-2000 competitive season by capturing the prestigious Fall
Championships Tournament, held Dec. 4 and Dec. 5 at Cal State Long Beach.
The squad unseated defending fall champs titleholder, the South Orange
County Community College District, in winning the 1999 crown. A total of
37 two- and four-year colleges and universities took part in the tourney.
“We had a phenomenal tournament, and I attribute our win to the wonderful
effort expended by our coaches, volunteers and students,” said co-Head
Coach Georgie Monahan. “It was a synergistic endeavor. The team focused
and worked conscientiously for two weeks in preparation for last
weekend’s big tournament.”
Speakers will now take a break for the holidays, and will return to the
second half of the campaign, beginning in February. The season will build
to a crescendo with the state and national tournaments scheduled for
March and April. The college’s squad is the defending state champion.
Chris Wright of Huntington Beach pulled down first-place awards in
readers theater and duo interpretation.
Shannon Pearce of Fountain Valley nabbed a gold medal in junior
parliamentary debate and was a finalist in informative speaking.
Jennifer Garcia of Huntington Beach finished second in informative
speaking.
Jon Stauber of Fountain Valley was a bronze medalist in junior impromptu
and reached the finals in junior extemporaneous and junior poetry.
