Chargers to host inaugural tournament

Edison High and the girls varsity basketball program will host the

inaugural Orange County Championships, a four-day basketball tournament

that will run from Dec. 27-30 at the Edison gymnasium.

The tournament has landed quite a field for its first endeavor, with

eight of its teams ranked among the top 15 by area sports writers.

All eight competing teams are reigning league champions, and posted a

combined 76-4 record in league play during the 1999 season.

The eight league champions vying for the title are host Edison (Sunset),

Troy (Freeway), San Clemente (co-champion, South Coast), defending State

Division III-AA champion Rosary (Golden West), Section finalist Foothill

(Century) El Toro (Seaview), Laguna Hills (Pacific Coast), and Mater Dei,

which shared the South Coast League crown with San Clemente.

The tournament features pool play, with the eight teams divided equally.

Pool A consists of Edison, Troy, San Clemente, and Rosary, while

Foothill, El Toro, Mater Dei, and Laguna Hills comprise Pool B.

The tournament schedule:

MONDAY (Dec. 27)

3:30 p.m. - Mater Dei vs. Laguna Hills

5 p.m. - Troy vs. San Clemente

6:30 p.m. - Foothill vs. El Toro

8 p.m. - Edison vs. Rosary

TUESDAY (Dec. 28)

3:30 p.m. - Foothill vs. Laguna Hills

5 p.m. - Rosary vs. Troy

6:30 p.m. - El Toro vs. Mater Dei

8 p.m. - San Clemente vs. Edison

WEDNESDAY (Dec. 29)

3:30 p.m. - Laguna Hills vs. El Toro

5 p.m. - San Clemente vs. Rosary

6:30 p.m. - Mater Dei vs. Foothill

8 p.m. - Edison vs. Troy

THURSDAY (Dec. 30)

3:30 p.m. - Pool A No. 4 vs. Pool B No. 4

5 p.m. - Pool A No. 3 vs. Pool B No. 3

6:30 p.m. - Pool A No. 2 vs. Pool B No. 2

8 p.m. - Pool A No. 1 vs. Pool B No. 1 (championship)
