1999 Football Dream Team
OFFENSE
DESHAI HOUSTON: Quarterback, Ocean View:
Houston compiled a record-setting season in which he threw for 2,645
yards by completing 192 of 384 passes, with a long of 81 yards. The
senior averaged 13.8 yards per completion and set a school record for
touchdown passes with 35. Houston served double duty as he also started
at defensive back, where he had 54 tackles, 32 assists, and a team-high
eight interceptions, plus a touchdown.
RAY MIETKIEWICZ: Marina, Fullback: What superlative hasn’t been used on
the three-year varsity performer? A bullish, go-to back who, time and
again, punished opposing defenses, Mietkiewicz went into the Marina
football record book only 11 times in a 28-game career.
M.J. ANSEL: Lineman, Marina: The senior was Marina’s best one-on-one
blocker and paved the way for much of the Vikings rushing yardage. A
quick-side tackle and a bright student, Ansel has attracted the attention
of such schools as Portland State, Bucknell, and UC Davis.
DARRYL POSTON: Running Back, Edison: An explosive back with unbridled
speed and agility, Poston, who returned to the playing field following a
one-year hiatus from the game, returned in full glory by rushing for
1,701 yards on 238 carries for a 7.2 average per rush. Poston also topped
the Chargers with a school-record 28 touchdowns (26 by rush) and 178
points on the season. In addition, the junior caught 12 passes for 339
yards (28.3 average) and two touchdowns, and returned four kickoffs for
154 yards - a 38-yard average.
SHAUN SHUCK: Running Back, Huntington Beach: The school’s ASB President
ended his prep career with 960 yards on 203 carries (4.7 avg.), and also
had 12 receptions total 74 yards. Shuck also started at cornerback, where
he came up with 37 solo tackles, 12 assisted tackles, three
interceptions, and three sacks.
BRENDON CORNELL: Receiver, Edison: The senior topped Edison’s receiving
list with 598 yards and seven touchdowns on 28 receptions. A clutch
receiver, Cornell averaged 21.4 yards per reception, and finished with 42
points scored. Cornell also played on defense, where he finished with
nine solo tackles, 13 assists, and an interception.
SEAN THOMPSON: Lineman, Fountain Valley: At 6-1, 265, Thompson,
Coach Eric Johnson said, ‘had a tremendous impact for us along our
offensive line.’
MANOA POUONO: Guard, Marina: Playing on the same side of the
offensive line as M.J. Ansel, Pouono made many key one-on-one plays, and
showed his prowess by overcoming little injuries throughout the season.
PATRICK CAMPBELL: Receiver, Ocean View:
Only a sophomore, Campbell served as Deshai Houston’s main target.
He caught 60 passes for 784 yards - which averaged out to 13.1 per
reception - and had seven touchdowns in addition to a pair of two-point
conversion receptions.
JOE WILSON: Center, Marina: A team leader with great movement and
leadership skills, Wilson served as the Vikings’ block calling guy and
was the decision maker along the line.
PHILLIP SMITH: Receiver, Ocean View:
Smith, a junior, also was on the receiving end of many of Houston’s
throws. He finished the year with 736 yards on 42 receptions (a 17.5
average), caught eight touchdown passes and two two-point conversion
passes, and had the Seahawk’s longest pass play from scrimmage (81 yards)
this year.
DEFENSE
STEVEN FIFITA: Lineman, Fountain Valley: A two-way player, Fifita starred
both along the defensive line and in the offensive backfield, where he
tended to mow over people as a fullback. On the d-line, however, his
presence certainly was felt as his 62 primary tackles, 17 tackles for
loss, 9 assisted tackles, 7 1/2 sacks, and four fumble recoveries - one
of which was returned for a touchdown against La Mirada - will attest.
KYLE WARREN: Outside Linebacker, Marina: Warren, an aggressive, spirited
leader, played just one year at Marina after transferring in from Bishop
Montgomery, but made his mark with the Vikings: 40 tackles, a team-high
seven sacks, five caused incompletes.
SETH PRELESNIK, Linebacker, Edison: Prelesnik turned in another
outstanding year with a team-best 77 primary tackles, a team-high 53
assists, three quarterback sacks, and five hurries. Prelesnik will return
to the Chargers for one final year.
SHAUN DONAHOE: Safety, Huntington Beach: One of the Oilers’ senior
leaders, Donahoe had a team-best 63 tackles, assisted 22 others, had
three interceptions, and two sacks. Donahoe also played wide receiver,
where he totaled 323 yards on 24 receptions (13.45 avg.).
BERNARD FANO: End, Fountain Valley: Just a junior, Fano will be the
defensive anchor for the Barons next year. He tuned up for his senior
year with a strong junior campaign that included a team-high 11 sacks, a
team-high 10 hurries, two caused fumbles, 49 tackles, and nine assisted
tackles.
PETER DUNBAR: Outside Linebacker, Marina: Along with Warren, was known as
Marina’s ‘Twin Towers.’ Dunbar, who came into his own during his senior
campaign, finished with 65 tackles, four sacks, one fumble recovery, one
interception, and had seven caused incompletes.
BRANDON COX: Inside Linebacker, Edison: Another defensive threat for the
Chargers, Cox was in 54 solo tackles, joined in on 51 others, had a
team-high seven sacks, six hurries, and two fumble recoveries.
CHRIS HILL: Linebacker, Ocean View:
Hill turned in another banner performance wearing the Cardinal and Gold.
The two-time All-Golden West League performer had 34 solo tackles,
assisted on a team-high 66 others, recovered two fumbles, and had one
quarterback sack and one blocked pass.
EDDIE IRWIN: Outside Linebacker, Fountain Valley: Irwin capped his Baron
career with 36 tackles, 12 assisted tackles, eight hurries, and also
returned an interception for a touchdown against Edison.
INOKE TUKIA: Linebacker, Marina: The quarterback on Marina’s defense,
Tukia completed a junior year that included a team-high 97 tackles, two
sacks, and six caused incompletes. A junior, Tukia also will start at
fullback next year for the Vikings.
BRIAN DOPLER: Middle Linebacker, Fountain Valley: Another senior, Dopler
led the Barons with five caused fumbles and also recorded 52 tackles,
assisted 12 others, and had 2 1/2 sacks.
KICKER

field goal attempts, which included makes of 53 and 50 yards, and Hanson
also was successful on 24 of 26 conversion kicks.
