Magic takes the lead

The Magic assumed sole possession of first place in the Fountain

Valley National Junior Basketball boys Division I standings with a 40-23

victory over the previously unbeaten Titans Sunday at Fountain Valley

High.

The Magic (3-0) took a five point lead after the first quarter, then went

on a 25-2 tear in the second quarter en route to a 34-6 halftime lead.

Ricky Hagen led the way with 19 points, with Nguyen Dau adding 11. Nate

Haglund topped the boards with 13 rebounds, and Ryan Pham finished with

10.

Drew Peterson’s nine points paced the Titans.

In other NJB action:

Grizzlies 50, Hornets 25

The Grizzlies (2-1) attacked the boards and used some tough defensive

tactics to double up on the Hornets. Nico Caputo led the charges with 10

points and 17 rebounds and Michael Entin was the game’s top scorer with

15 points.

Brad Young scored seven points to lead the Hornets.

Heat 43, Hawks 42

Paul Youssef, who scored 15 points, dropped in three of those with a

decisive, game-winning three-point basket in the final minute - which

gave the Heat their only lead of the game. Matthew Derocili added 10

points and led the way with eight rebounds for the Heat.

DIVISION 2

Spurs 47, Knicks 27

Sean Carroll scored eight points to go along with seven rebounds and

three assists, Jim Collen scored five points, had eight rebounds, and

four assists, Andrew Davis finished with six rebounds and two steals,

Mike Corpuz had three steals, and Phillip Grandis had a pair of steals to

power the Spurs.

DIVISION 3

Bulls 41, Calvary Chapel 12

Teamwork spelled the difference in this victory by the Bulls, who

received 17 points from Freddie Pepper and seven points, five rebounds,

and four assists from Tyler Freleaux.

DIVISION 1

Oilers 44, Warriors 19

Tim Hoffman, Trevor Schuesler, and Chris Potrykus combined for 27 points

to help lead the Oilers (3-0) past the Warriors at Westminster High.

Andrew Mellon and Robbie Dick led a strong defensive effort that limited

the normally potent Warrior offense to just 19 points. Kevin Diamond and

Mike Booker led the Warriors with five points each.
