The Alzheimer’s Assn. of Orange County provides a calendar every year

with artwork done by patients with Alzheimer’s; the proceeds benefit the

association. This year it has expanded into an engagement calendar for

the year 2000. More than a calendar, it is a resource for families and

friends who want to learn more about caring for and caring about a loved

one with Alzheimer’s. “The 54 paintings by Alzheimer patients are

reminders about the person alive inside who remains and is often ignored

by those around them,” says Linda Scheck, executive director of the

association. “The paintings are their voice. They tell of emotions or

past memories or hopes or love. The calendar is a resource, as well. I

call your attention to the sections on Research and Diagnosis, Coping and

Caring and Choices and Contributors. They contain information for

everyone who is touched by someone with a dementia. The material is

presented in a positive and upbeat manner meant to educate and inform.”

The funds raised from the calendars are used to provide free services to

help families in our community. Those include visiting volunteers, help

line consultation, advocacy, support groups, education and counseling.

The calendars are $15, plus tax, and can be ordered by calling (800)

660-1993. They can be mailed anywhere in the country as a special gift to

someone who might benefit from the helpful information inside. A

personalized message can be enclosed from the sender. The calendars are

also available at Draper’s and Damon’s in Westcliff Plaza.
