Sailors dominate All-Sea View

Newport Harbor High junior Chris Manderino, who had a marquee role

on both sides of the ball, and senior record-setting tailback Andre

Stewart, top a whopping 16 Sailors honored among the Daily Pilot’s

All-Sea View League football selections.

Manderino, a quarterback who threw for five touchdowns in league and ran

for three more, was also a standout outside linebacker for the league’s

best defense. His two-way prominence earned him Most Valuable Player

laurels.

Stewart, who rushed for 785 yards and four TDs in four league games, is

the Offensive Player of the Year.

Sailors Coach Jeff Brinkley, who guided the Tars to their second league

title in his 14-season tenure, is Coach of the Year.

League coaches lavished praise on Manderino and Stewart, who also

spearheaded the successful playoff run that culminated in a CIF Southern

Section Division VI title.

“Manderino is a stud,” said one coach, while another termed the 6-foot-2,

195-pounder “first tier.”

Stewart, who set a school single-game record with 310 rushing yards in a

27-10 triumph over Laguna Hills, dazzled opposing coaches with quickness

and toughness. He went on to break the school single-season record with

2,404 rushing yards.

Representing the Sailors on the first-team offense are senior receiver

Billy Clayton, senior tight end Nick Langsdorf, senior tackles Blair

Jones and Robert Cole, as well as senior guard Nick Haddy.

Middle linebacker Alan Saenz, a junior, is joined on the first-team

defense by senior outside ‘backer Mike Tunney, senior cornerback Justin

Jacobs, and junior end Garrett Troncale.

Senior offensive linemen Luis Cruz and Steve Wukawitz, as well as junior

blocking back Travis Trimble, are second-team picks on offense.

Senior nose guard Andy Kalanz, as well as senior strong safety Dayne

Pfaff are second-team selections from the Harbor defensive unit.

Clayton caught 10 passes for 175 yards and four TDs in league.

Jones, a 6-8, 262-pounder, as well as the 6-5, 325-pound Cole and the

6-3, 257-pound Haddy, helped the Tars dominate the trenches. The 6-4,

225-pound Langsdorf’s blocking prowess was also a huge boon to the ground

attack.

Saenz, an imposing physical presence at 6-1, 250, and Tunney battled

Manderino all season for team lead in tackles.

Troncale, an explosive pass rusher, led the Sailors with 12 sacks, while

Jacobs, a two-way standout, was a consistent cover man.

Cruz, Wukawitz and Trimble helped punch holes in opposing defenses, while

Kalanz was a tenacious trench warrior and Pfaff emerged as a valuable

ally against the run or the pass.
