He keeps his political views fairly contained these days, but Clarence

Turner was once outspoken on issues that polarized the community. Turner,

who served on the Newport Beach City Council from 1990 to 1994, holding

the position of mayor in 1993, was instrumental in establishing the

Airport Working Group. The group advocated converting the El Toro Marine

Corps Air Station into a commercial airport and worked to restrict the

scale of the operation at John Wayne Airport.

Today, Turner’s activities have less to do with controversial politics

than with local culture. He serves on the board of directors of Opera

Pacific and the Newport Beach Public Library foundations, and maintains

close ties with the Orange County Business Council and the Newport Beach

Aviation Committee.

* MILLENNIUM MOMENT celebrates the people who have made a major

contribution to the Newport-Mesa community during this century.
