GARDEN GROVE - In a game destined for a family scrapbook, Kristin

and Jackie McCoy led Corona del Mar High’s girls basketball team to a

55-35 win over Los Amigos in the Cavalier Classic at Santiago.

Led is actually an understatement. The McCoys scored 37 of CdM’s first 39

points, and finished with 41 total. Kristin scored 13 of her 23 points in

the first half. Jackie had 14 points in the second half and ended up with

18.

CdM (10-3) now carries a seven game winning streak into tonight’s

first-place game against (ElMo-Norco winner. game starts at 8 p.m., Wed.)

at 8 p.m.

The McCoy’s performance was greatly appreciated by CdM in an ugly game

that featured an 8-2 first quarter score. The Sea Kings shot 20 % in the

first half, and still led 19-7 at halftime. The Lady Lobos (3-8) hit one

field goal in that half, withering under CdM’s defense.

“The best thing about this game is that it’s over and nobody got hurt,”

CdM Coach Elbert Davis said. “But we had an emotional win (on Tuesday

over Sonora). And it’s hard to play a team you beat by 30 points the

first time.”

Los Amigos, who lost to CdM, 51-21, earlier this year, finally gained

their confidence against CdM in the fourth quarter, scoring 18 points and

aggressively attacking the basket.

CdM’s offense also awoke in the fourth. The rest of the team joined the

McCoys, and only missed five shots as they got easy transition baskets in

a frenetic quarter.

Andrea Gruber was the only other CdM player to score in the first half,

and she sparked her team with four steals in the second half. Chris Eyre

had a game-high 10 rebounds for the Sea Kings.
