Heat Turns It On

Josh Belvedere scored 18 points and the West Huntington Beach Heat

jumped out to an early lead and never looked back in beating the

Warriors, 46-39, in a boys National Junior Basketball contest Sunday.

The triumph was the second in a row for the Heat, who used a late

comeback and 12 points by Kyle Bernard and 11 from Tyler Mitchell in a

37-31 win over the Blazers.

Against the Warriors, Kyle Bernard added 10 points and Justin Ratowsky

finished with eight to compliment Belvedere’s game-high output.

The Warriors nearly caught the Heat and pulled to within three points

late in the game behind the three-point shooting of Kevin Diamond, who

led his team with 13 points. Jesse Du scored 12 and Mark Jaso added eight

for the Warriors.

WHB Oilers 31, Newport Mesa 30

The Oilers overcame a five-point deficit at the outset of the fourth

quarter to win their fourth game of the season and remain undefeated in

Division 1 play. Jeff Holiday scored 10 points and Tim Hoffman chipped in

seven more and both Trevor Schuesler and Chris Potrykus sparked the

defense as the Oilers wiped out an early 10-point Sparks lead.

DIVISION 1

Magic 35, Grizzlies 28

The Magic pulled away from a two-point halftime lead with a 15-6 run to

move their first-place record to 4-0. Nguyen Dau paved the way with 13

points, Nate Haglund scored eight points and dominated the boards with 11

rebounds, Ricky Hagen scored eight points with five assists, and Ryan

Pham and Jeff Millard finished with six and five rebounds, respectively.

Titans 57, Heat 44

Paul Youusef hit six three-point shots and finished with 20 points,

Matthew Derocili scored nine points and matched them with nine rebounds,

and Viet Nguyen added eight points for the Heat.

DIVISION 2

Lakers 33, Spurs 31

Jim Flanagan did it all for the victorious Lakers, scoring 22 points

(which included 7 for 7 from the foul line), eight rebounds, three

steals, a clutch three-point shot to tie the game with 37 seconds

remaining, and the biggest basket of the day - the game-winner - with 14

seconds to play. Russell Funke led the Lakers with 10 rebounds, Logan

Martina had four steals, and Mike Almanza added six points for the

first-place Lakers (4-0). Max Rudzwick scored 17 points with six

rebounds, Jimmy Walker contributed four points, seven assists, and seven

rebounds, and Mike Corpuz turned in a strong defensive game for the

Spurs.

DIVISION 3

Hornets 37, Westminster 13

Zachary Yelulonis scored seven of his nine points in the opening quarter,

Dillon Gearin scored a game-high 11 points, and Matt Empting netted six

points to go along with seven steals to power the Hornets past the

Lakers.

Bulls 37, Westminster 12

Freddie Pepper scored 20 points and hauled in 11 rebounds, Russell

Westphal’s balanced game yielded six points, five assists, and three

rebounds, and Buster Gallegos grabbed nine rebounds as the Bulls exploded

in the second half to roll past the Celtics.
