NEWPORT BEACH - The Sea View League continued to be less than

hospitable for Newport Harbor High’s girls basketball team Wednesday when

Woodbridge visited. The Warriors won, 66-11, to drop the Sailors to 0-3

in league.

“Woodbridge is a good team,” Newport Harbor Coach Gregg Savage said.

“We’re extremely young and inexperienced. They’re aggressive and they’re

experienced. We want to be like them in the next couple of years.”

The Sailors (3-15, 0-3 in league) stuck with Woodbridge for the first

five minutes, only down 8-2 at that point. Then the Warriors (11-6, 2-0)

started getting turnovers in bunches, and it was 19-2 Woodbridge after

one quarter.

Newport scored seven of its 11 points in the second quarter, and held

Woodbridge to 12. But the Sailors failed to score for 15:46 in the second

half, until reserve Mariko Mikami hit a short jumper for Newport with 14

seconds left in the game. It was her first bucket of the season.

“They came out and played hard,” Savage said about his team. “They give a

great effort every time, and you can’t complain about that.”

Mikami, Molly Weedn, Athena Vasquez, Lauren Gallardo and Briana Brooks

got the only field goals for Newport and scored two each. Lisa Gerlach

hit one free throw, and she also grabbed six rebounds in the game. Brooks

had five rebounds.

Bryn Riley and Natalie Quinn led Woodbridge with nine points each, as

every Warrior scored. Quinn also hit the games’ only three-pointers,

shooting 3 for 9 from behind the arc.
