CORONA DEL MAR - Corona del Mar High’s girls soccer player Allison

Harvey definitely has a strong head on her shoulders.

Despite blows to the cranium from a University opponent and the Trojans’

goal post, Harvey managed to score both of the Sea Kings’ goals in

Tuesday’s 2-0 Pacific Coast League win.

“I tell you what, I wouldn’t want to be the one that has to defend her,”

Coach Ron Evans said about his sophomore sniper. “Allison is just a

total, all-around player, who is dangerous around the net.”

Corona del Mar (10-5-2, 3-0-0 in league), ranked No. 2 in CIF Southern

Section Division IV, got its offense going right from the opening

whistle, but University goalkeeper Nicole Williams made several

outstanding, point-blank saves to keep the game scoreless.

“We’ve been able to get some opportunities to score in the past few

games, but we haven’t been able to knock them in,” Evans said. “That’s

something we’re gonna need to do down the stretch.”

Off a throw-in deep near University’s goal, CdM senior Kate Simon sent

the ball off a strong head pass to Harvey, who slipped the ball past

Williams in the 12th minute, giving the Sea Kings an early 1-0 lead.

CdM’s defense was just as strong, not allowing the Trojans many scoring

opportunities.

Junior goalkeeper Britta Vogele, had five saves for CdM.

“She’s been real strong as of late,” Evans said. “She didn’t have too

many tough saves, but she stepped up when she had to.”

Both teams struggled offensively to open the second half before CdM

turned up the pressure.

Freshman Olivia Mazura, who applied constant pressure throughout the

game, sent a pass to senior Julia Livingston, who, then, fed Harvey.

Harvey headed the cross-field pass over the outstretched fingers of

Williams, into the goal at the 65th minute, stretching the lead to 2-0.

She now has 12 goals for the season.

From there, CdM clamped down on the Trojans, not allowing a single shot

the final 10 minutes of the game.

“We’ve really been working on limiting our opponents’ opportunities,”

Evans said. “Really wanted to play a full 80 minutes and I think we did a

good job of that.”

Next up for the Sea Kings, they travel to Costa Mesa to take on the

Mustangs Thursday at 3:15 p.m.
