Grizzlies get past Titans

The Grizzlies collected their third victory of the season Sunday by

combining a balanced scoring attack with strong rebounding and tough

defense in a 57-41 victory over the Titans in Fountain Valley National

Junior Basketball boys Division I action at Fountain Valley High.

Kevin Ferraro poured in a game-high 19 points to go along with seven

rebounds, Michael Entin had 14 points and eight rebounds, Nico Caputo

closed with seven points and eight rebounds, and Robert Hansen came up

with seven assists as the Grizzlies evened their season record at 3-3.

The second-place Titans, who fell to 4-2, were led by Robert Schneider’s

14 points, while Ryan Meltal and Danny Levin each scored eight points.

In other games:

Hornets 38, Heat 37

Mike Castleberry’s 12-foot bank shot proved to be the winning basket as

the Hornets held off the Heat. Brad Young paced the Hornets with 13

points and 11 rebounds, Keith Sinclair added 10 points with 10 rebounds,

Castleberry finished with nine points, Chris Urbaniec contributed six

points, and the defensive efforts of Jesse Anaya (nine rebounds, six

steals) and Jeff Hernandez, were other keys to the victory. Paul Youusef

scored 16 points, and Matthew Bitar and Frank Arredondo each scored eight

points and had eight key rebounds between them.

Magic 59, Hawks 31

Nguyen Dau came up with a league-high and career-high 32 points to go

along with six steals, point guard Ricky Hagen’s balanced performance

included 11 points, 10 rebounds, and four steals, Kevin Kim led the way

on defense, and unselfish team play - as well as the entire line-up

hitting the scoring column for the first time - helped the first place

Magic improve to 6-0.

DIVISION 2

Lakers 45, Knicks 36

A 26 point led dwindled to just nine points in the final quarter, before

the Lakers held on to win. Jim Flanagan scored six point with five

rebounds and two blocked shots, Michael Almanza finished with 11 points

and four steals, Tyler Grigsby scored seven points with a pair of steals

and four rebounds, and Logan Martina scored nine points with 10 rebounds

and a steal as the Lakers ran their record to 5-1.

DIVISION 3

Bulls 32, Hornets 24

Freddie Pepper’s 13 points, five rebounds, and five steals paced the

Bulls, who also received nine points, six assists, four rebounds, and a

pair of steals from Russell Westphal, 13 rebounds and three steals from

Tyler Freeleaux, and strong defensive play from Tsubasa Furukawa.

Matt Empting scored 11 points with five rebounds and four steals and

Shane Armstrong handed out four steals to go along with four points for

the Hornets.

Supersonics 38, Westminster 10

The Supersonics improved to 6-0 behind solid team defense, Jon Perez’s 11

points and five rebounds, and Colin Carroll’s eight points.
