This converted World War I Sub Chaser was homeported at Newport Harbor

from 1927 to 1930.

Fred E. Lewis, the yacht’s owner, docked the vessel at his private pier

at the foot of 8th Street on the Balboa Peninsula.

This pier with a large shed or garage on the shore end was acquired by

Newport Harbor Yacht Club in 1931 and was used as the club house and pier

for NHYC’s “Non-Calms” youth sailing program.

The Stranger was built by Mare Island Navy Shipyard in 1918. She was

powered with twin Atlas Imperial diesel engines, 180 horsepower each. Her

conversion to a yacht took place in 1926. She was 110 feet long.
