Girls basketball: Sailors fall to Laguna Hills
Tony Altobelli
NEWPORT BEACH - The knowledge continues to pile high for Newport
Harbor High’s girls basketball team.
“We’ve been taking each game like a learning lesson,” Coach Gregg Savage
said following his team’s 50-16 Sea View League loss to visiting Laguna
Hills Tuesday night. “We know that these games will help us down the
road.”
Despite the lopsided loss, Savage was proud of his team’s effort and
hustle on defense.
“We played 100% better than we did the last time we played them,” Savage
said. “We were more aggressive on defense and we managed to keep it
rather close for a while.”
Molly Weedn led the Sailors (4-19, 0-6 in league) with eight points,
while Lindsay Moore, Nicole Ashton, Lauren Gallardo and Mariko Mikami
each had two.
Megan Aaker had 19 points and Shanice Owens added 17 for the Hawks (12-12, 3-3).
The Sailors started the game as the aggressor and kept the game close,
forcing some Hawks’ turnovers.
The score was tied midway through the first before a 9-2 Hawks’ run, put
Laguna Hills in control for good.
It was the Sailors’ turnovers that blew the game open down the stretch.
“We’re still a little lost against the zone,” Savage said. “Our offense
struggled against their zone all night, but we did a little better job of
finding the open shooter. It’s getting there, but it’s gonna take some
time to improve on it.”SEA VIEW LEAGUE
