Goald! All-Stars edge Fountain Valley

Jennifer Wells scored the lone goal of the match off an assist from

Mandy Rice to give the Goald!, a Region 117 (Huntington Beach/Fountain

Valley) girls Under-12 All-Star squad, a 1-0 victory over Region 5

(Fountain Valley) in Area K Tournament play Sunday.

Goalies Rachel Hays and Christina Berardi combined their talents to post

the shutout, and was helped out by a defense that was anchored by Julia

Moreno, Katia Hadj-Hamou, and Erin McCarthy.

Later that day, Melinda Rackliffe scored in the third period to break a

scoreless halftime tie, and Goald! collected another victory in beating

Region 517 (Santa Ana), 3-0. After Rackliffe’s score, Tea Toplak and

Nicole Edwards each netted a goal to secure the win.

Christie Brady, Sheri Rosen, and defender Shawna Roberts also turned in

strong performances in the Santa Ana win.

In other Area K Under-12 Tournament action Sunday, Region 56 (South

Huntington Beach) defeating Region 143 (West Huntington Beach), 2-0, and

Region 517 (Santa Ana) shutout Region 55 (Central Huntington Beach), 4-0.

Region 117 is the host for both the girls Under-12 and boys Under-12

All-Star Area K playoffs. The tournament continues every Saturday and

will run until Feb. 26. All games are played at either Talbert or Gisler

Elementary schools.

Winners of the double, round robin tournament will advance to the AYSO

Section 11 championships on March 11 at UC Irvine.
