Girls water polo: Mesa beats Mira Costa
CORONA DEL MAR - Costa Mesa high’s girls water polo team advanced
to the 25th place semifinals with a resounding 6-2 win over Mira Costa
Friday in the Irvine Southern California Championships at Corona del Mar.
Mesa (7-15) got 22 steals, 11 in the two-meter area, to render Mira
Costa’s offense completely ineffective. The Mustangs scored three times
in the fourth quarter and once in the third for a 4-2 lead. Jody
Martinovich, Jan Grubisich, Katy Petersen and Dana Steenhard got Mesa’s
goals.
Shayna Kline then scored twice to give Mesa a 6-2 lead. Goalie Casey
Petersen made eight saves for the Mustangs, who play today, 11 a.m., at
CdM against the Millikan-LB Poly winner.
In a second round game, Mesa had a 1-0 lead in the first quarter, but it
was all Edison after that as the Chargers won, 7-2.
Mesa’s Erin Bayes scored with 1:20 left in the first quarter. Petersen,
who made eight saves, and the Mustang defense stifled Edison’s offense.
But the Chargers (11-10) woke up in the second quarter, getting a
six-on-five goal for their first score. Edison scored seventimes in a
row, taking a 7-1 lead in the fourth.
Kline got a six-on-five goal for Mesa in the final seconds. The Mustangs
