Boys soccer: Eagles keep on rolling

CORONA DEL MAR - The biggest thing Estancia High boys soccer coach

Steve Crenshaw worried about was a letdown in Friday’s Pacific Coast

League clash with host Corona del Mar.

Unfortunately for the Sea Kings not even a wrapped-up league title could

deter the Eagles from their fast aggressive play, which resulted in a 4-0

triumph.

“If we manage to score a couple early, we’re pretty dangerous,” Crenshaw

said. “My main concern was that we wouldn’t come out focused, but we just

refuse to let up. Our team sees the big picture.

Four first-half goals by Juan Zarate, Cesar Terrones, Esaul Mendoza and

Irvine Islas put Estancia (14-1-1, 7-0-0 in league), ranked No. 2 in CIF

Southern Section Division IV, in command for good.

“Our goal coming in was not to allow them any time to set up,” Sea Kings’

Coach Scott Dameron said. “You give them too much space and they’ll kill

you.”

CdM’s goalkeeper Cedric Chun had nine saves, four from point-blank range.

The Sea Kings (8-6-1, 2-3-1) will need a big week next week if they are

to receive a playoff berth. They host University on Monday before playing

at Costa Mesa on Wednesday, both at 3:15 p.m.

“We need at least three points (a win and a tie) next week to have a

shot,” Dameron said. “It’s down to the last week.”
