NEWPORT-MESA SCHOOL BOARD PREVIEW

STUDY SESSION

The Newport-Mesa school board will meet at 5:30 p.m. in a study session

to discuss creating a reserve fund to finance the upkeep of schools after

the facilities repairs are completed. Board members will discuss the

potential sale of the district’s surplus properties -- the Balearic Park

and Banning Ranch sites. The study session is the third in a series of

five meetings.

What to expect: An outline of options for funding the maintenance reserve

will be presented to the board. District officials will discuss the

facilities committee’s funding ideas, which include the sale of Balearic

Park and Banning Ranch, with the proceeds being invested and the interest

put into the reserve. The public is invited and encouraged to attend and

offer input. There will be no action taken at this study session.

RETURN FROM BANKRUPTCY

The board will consider approving a resolution that will allow the

district to receive bankruptcy proceeds.

What to expect:The board will adopt the resolution in order to receive

the next distribution of proceeds from the 1994 Orange County bankruptcy.

This installment of the funds is expected to be in the neighborhood of $2

million. District officials expect the funds to be distributed Feb. 24.

The school board has dedicated these returned funds toward reducing debts

incurred from previous facility repairs and enhancements.

LEARNING CENTER PROGRAM

The district will recognize a new tutoring program at Whittier Elementary

School. Helping One Student To Succeed, or HOSTS, is a learning center

that provides one-on-one tutoring for students.
