Locals Set To Hoop It Up

Sunset League boys basketball co-champion Marina High, and Edison,

which won the girls’ Sunset race, both were awarded first round byes

Sunday when the CIF Southern Section basketball division playoffs were

announced.

The Vikings, who rode a 16-game win streak during the course of the

regular season en route to a 23-3 finish, will play at home Friday in its

Division I-A opener. Marina will take on the winner of Wednesday’s first

round game between Buena and Saugus.

Edison, which won its second consecutive Sunset title, will open Division

I-A play Saturday at home against the winner of Thursday’s matchup

between Perris and University.

Marina was seeded seventh, while Edison drew a No. 6 seed.

“We figured we’d be right about there,” Marina Coach Roger Holmes said of

his team’s seeding. “The kids are really fired up and ready to go.”

Marina will be out to end a jinx Friday when it takes the court: the last

two years, Viking teams have lost their playoff openers.

Tonight, two local girls teams will begin their quests for the Division

I-A crown when Marina (Sunset No. 3, 18-9) hosts Sunny Hills (Freeway

League at-large, 11-15) and Huntington Beach (Sunset at-large, 14-13)

travels to El Dorado (Empire No. 3, 15-11) in first round action.

Ocean View, which ran away with the Golden West League boys title, will

put its 25-2 record on the line Friday when it hosts Rancho Alamitos,

12-13 overall and an at-large entry out of the Garden Grove League, in a

Division II-A first round game. The Seahawks will be looking to win their

second section title in three years.

Fountain Valley’s boys, who finished 14-12 overall, opened postseason

play for the locals Wednesday when the Barons visited South Coast League

runner-up Capistrano Valley (17-9) in a Division I-AA first round game.

All playoff games are schedule for 7:30 p.m. starts.
