AYSO Region 120: Costa Mesa takes APP championship

COSTA MESA - The Costa Mesa boys under 14 team captured the APP

championship Jan. 30, finishing the season, 11-1-2.

The APP playoffs comprise of 24 teams from Glendale to San Clemente.

In the 14 games, Costa Mesa outscored its opponents, 126-23, and 18-2 in

the playoffs.

The players include Danny Whitaker, Noe Martinez, Geovanni Macias, Sean

Weikel, David Barnett, Nagib Marroquin, Matt Schirmer, Shane Collins,

Tyler Cody, James Maglione, Matt Zich, Tyler Herried, Ryan Twing and

Scott Harris.

In under 14 girls action: After knocking off Tustin, 1-0, in the semifinals, the Costa Mesa Girls

Region 120 under 14 team lost to Mission Viejo, 4-1, in the APP

championship Sunday night.

Sara Bryant scored both of Costa Mesa’s goals in the two games, while

goalkeepers Leah Blackwell and Valerie Gomez held down the fort.

Leading the defense was Marilyn Morgan, Eva Garcia, Brittney Bunnel,

Carley Millian and Holly Wells, while Maggie Visbeek, Vera Gale, Rachel

Ronquillo, Casey Gype, Rachel Hughes and Carly Petrie sparked the

offense.

Matrix 3, Corona del Mar 1 - The Matrix, a boys under 12 team, defeated

Corona del Mar, 3-1 in all-star competition.

Kennith Zich, Austin Evett and Albert Nava each scored for the Matrix,

who never trailed in the game.

The strong defensive line was led by Shawn Engmann, Christian Medina,

Cody Waldron, Gandhy Nava and goalkeepers Thomas Kosnosky and Kyle

Thorsness.

On offense, Nickolas Juarez had an assist, while Luis Andrade, German

Higadera, Luis Cozza, Steven Brown and Garrett McMasters led the Matrix.
