NEWPORT BEACH - Newport Harbor High’s frosh/soph girls soccer team

finished an exemplary season, going 11-2-2 and blasting through the Sea

View League.

The Sailors’ only two losses came against highly regarded Edison and

eventual champion Trabuco Hills in the Edison Invitational Tournament.

But Newport came back in the tournament and won the consolation

championship, with a 1-0 shutout of Millikan. The Sailors only gave up

one goal during the whole tournament, while scoring seven.

The Sailors were most impressive against Sea View rivals Irvine,

Woodbridge and Aliso Niguel. They outscored those three, 30-0, in six

games. Newport wrapped up its season Feb. 10 with a 7-0 win over the

Wolverines.

Newport benefited from a powerful offense that featured Allison McKenzie,

Allison Brooks, Stephanie Rees, Delanie Ferguson, Chanelle Sladics,

Whitney George, Mary Sullivan, Kaley Nix, Kaytie Iacovino, Rachel Furman

and Sabrina Couch. In a testament to the Sailors’ depth, all 11 girls

scored this year.

The Sailors’ defenders were also offensive threats, scoring occasional

goals, but tallying assists consistently. The defense featured goalie

Sarah Redmond, sweeper Lauren Kerwin, as well as fullbacks Kirsten

Chamberlain, Nichelle McRorie and Chloe Cox.

Congratulations to Newport Harbor’s girls frosh/soph water polo team,

which just wrapped up its first undefeated season at 24-0. The Sailors

won the El Dorado Tournament Feb. 13 with a 6-2 title-game triumph over

Valhalla from San Diego.

Before that, the Tars won their own tournament with a 6-2 victory over

Long Beach Wilson. Paige Lansing scored twice and Annie Wight, Amber

Braly, Amanda Moss and Ashley Parole each had one Newport goal against

the Bruins.

For the season, Wight led Newport with 58 goals and Lansing was second

with 46.

Goalie Raelyn Ritchie had 46 saves and 27 assists for Newport, while

Candace Tyler had 27 saves.

Corona del Mar’s frosh/soph girls water polo team finished 13-5 with a

9-4 win over Costa Mesa. Brittany Bowlus, CdM’s leading scorer, netted

four goals in the last game, and goalie Jessica Wells made three saves.

Bowlus, Katie Cole, Christina Rieker, Keelan Cuyler, Kelli Kline, Katie

Hughes, Hillary Powers, Yvette Zaharian, Julie Mendleson, Hayley Sheets,

Danielle Assalino, Alexandra Schwartz, Danielle Rosenbloon, Brittany

Hyter and Alexis Tilsen were all key members of the Sea Kings’ offense.

Wells and Vanessa Hill were the goalies for CdM.
