BEHIND THE SCENES

Share via

* WHO: Pete Cuneo

* AGE: 81

* JOB TITLE: Volunteer Coordinator Manager

* HE IS: In charge or recruiting and placing more than 1000 tournament

volunteers.

* DAILY DUTIES: Cuneo, a volunteer at the tournament since 1973, said his

years of experience make it easy for him to keep things running smoothly.

“I’ve done everything; admissions, ticketing and credential

verification,” said the avid golfer who lives in La Mirada. “I know this

tournament inside out.”

The toughest part of his job, he said, is making sure all the volunteers

are satisfied.

“Obviously, everyone wants to keep score so they can meet the pros,”

Cuneo said. “But scorekeepers need experience and they need to know

golf.”

* DID YOU KNOW?

Volunteers actually pay tournament organizers $60 to help out. In return,

they get red golf sweaters emblazoned with the tournament logo, a white

short sleeved golf shirt, a cap, a two-day spectator’s pass and an $8

food voucher.

Despite the fee, Cuneo said it’s always been easy to attract volunteers.

The reason, he said, is that people want to help raise money for Hoag

Hospital, which will receive tournament proceeds.

“And this is Newport Beach,” he added. “Apart from having boat nuts,

there are a lot of golf nuts.”
