Police arrest suspect in Irvine shooting

IRVINE -- Authorities have arrested a man they believe was involved in
Monday morning’s attempted murder of a Newport Beach businessman.
Dino Dsaachs, 56, was arrested in his Altadena home at 10:15 p.m. Monday
in connection with the shooting of James Patrick Riley, the 58-year-old
owner of an Irvine-based research and development company called Biofem,
which manufactures feminine products and contraceptives, said Irvine
police Sgt. Rick Handfield.
Although police have yet to establish a motive for the attack, Handfield
said it’s “reasonable to think” the attempt on Riley’s life was a
“professional job.”
“We’re confident that we will uncover all of the facts that are
surrounding this crime,” he added.
The shooting occurred at 9:48 a.m. Monday near the Spectrum Bank
building, 15615 Alton Parkway, in Irvine.
According to reports from witnesses, Dsaachs was armed with a
semiautomatic handgun and was seen wearing black clothing, gloves and a
ski mask.
Shortly after the incident, a partial license plate number was provided
by witnesses and police located Dsaachs after they had determined the
missing number.
“There were only 26 letters we could run, so it didn’t take very long,”
Handfield said.
Dsaachs, who owns a tax consulting business in Los Angeles, brought his
car to a repair shop for a new paint job after the shooting, Handfield
said.
Authorities said they are in the process of obtaining a search warrant
for Dsaachs’ business.
Riley, who suffered a serious facial would in the attack, was taken to
Mission Community Hospital where he remains in stable condition,
authorities said.
Dsaachs, who remained in Orange County Jail on Tuesday, will be arraigned
today at Harbor Municipal Court in Newport Beach, Handfield said.
