-- Danette Goulet

WHO: Jerry Roberts

AGE: 65

JOB TITLE: Putting green marshal

HE IS: In charge of making sure everything rolls smoothly.

DAILY DUTIES: For the third consecutive year, Roberts has watched

over the putting green at Newport Beach Country Club, making sure

tournament players and their caddies have everything they need.

“I assist the players, caddies and factory reps,” he said. “I’m here from

the first daylight until dark, because players practice their putting

early in the morning and come back at the end to practice for the next

day.”

Roberts also assists in crowd control, keeping spectators off the putting

surface.

DID YOU KNOW? The “quiet” signs used by course marshals at most

professional golf tournaments are not used in Senior PGA Tour events.

“Seniors don’t like the quiet signs, so marshals just hold their hands

up,” Roberts said. “I never have quite figured out why they don’t like

them.”
