St. Paul orchestra to play at Center

The St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, which is celebrating its 40th anniversary

season, will perform at 8 p.m. March 10 in the Orange County Performing

Arts Center’s Segestrom Hall.

Under the direction of Hugh Wolff, the orchestra’s principal conductor,

the concert will showcase the talents of the Grammy Award-winning group.

With Andrew Watts at piano, the performance will include Beethoven’s

“Piano Concerto No. 1 in C for Piano, Opus 15” and “Symphony No. 1 in C,

Opus 21.”

A new work by Michael Daugherty, “Sunset Strip,” also will be performed.

Tickets to the concert are $35 and $44. The Center is at 600 Town Center

Drive, Costa Mesa.

OCC orchestra plans third concert of season

The Orange Coast College Symphony Orchestra will present a concert of

works by American composer Aaron Copland and Russian composer Dimitri

Shostakovich at 7:30 p.m. March 12.

Directed by Alan Remington, the symphony will begin with the four

episodes from Copland’s “Rodeo”: “Buckaroo Holiday,” “Chorale Nocturne,”

“Saturday Night Waltz” and “Howdown.”

After intermission, the orchestra will perform Shostakovich’s “Symphony

No. 5.” The concert is the third of the symphony’s 39th season.

Tickets are $8 at the door; $6 in advance.

Kingston Trio to appear at OCC

The popular Kingston Trio will appear at 4 p.m. Sunday at Orange Coast

College’s Robert B. Moore Theatre.

Best known for the tune “Tom Dooley,” the folksy trio began in Palo Alto

in 1957. In three-part harmony, the group includes members George Grove,

Bob Haworth and Bob Shane.

At the Sunday concert, the group will perform such songs as “Three Jolly

Coachmen,” “Early Morning Rain,” “Scotch and Soda” and “Tom Dooley.”

Tickets are $29 in advance, $33 at the door.
