Edison to battle Mater Dei for boys Division II soccer title
The Edison High boys soccer team will be out to win a CIF Southern
Section championship today when the Chargers take on Mater Dei at 10 a.m.
at Cal State Fullerton’s soccer stadium.
Edison (19-4-2) advanced to the title match by edging El Dorado Tuesday,
1-0, on the strength of junior midfielder Jeff Kinkoff’s second half goal
and a strong defensive effort led by goalie Joey Balbas and seniors Jeff
Kunze and Billy Pena.
Mater Dei (27-5-1) moved on to the final by virtue of a 4-1 semifinal
upset of previously unbeaten Riverside Poly, which had its 29-match win
streak ended.
Also on tap today at Cal State Fullerton, Edison’s Sunset League rival,
Esperanza, will take on Temecula Valley at 2 p.m. in the Division I
final.
