Estancia’s baseball team doubles up Rancho Alamitos, 4-2. Darren Bass

hits a two-run hmer in the first inning for the Eagles.

Corona del Mar’s baseball team beats Santa Ana Valley, 8-5 to take fifth

place in the Newport Elks Tournament. Myles Davis goes 3-for-4 and scores

two runs.

The Sea Kings wins their Sea View League baseball opener, 13-7, over El

Toro. Royal McMakin hits a three-run homer for CdM.

Newport Harbor’s baseball team takes the Newport Elks consolation

championship with an 8-3 victory over Orange Lutheran. Joe Urban hits a

two-run homer for the Tars.

Newport’s Mike Freeman, who went deep against Orange Lutheran, does it

again as the Sailors’ baseball team squeaks by Laguna Beach, 6-5.

Estancia’s Jill Black throws a three-hit, 3-0 shutout of Century in

softball.

Costa Mesa’s Niki Montgomery and Sonia Correr combine for a 3-0 shoutout

of Liberty Christians’ softball team.

Shannon Shayler throws a no-hitter as her Southern California College’s

softball team gets a 4-0 win over Lee.

Ten years ago

No. 1 seed Estancia’s boys basketball team opens the CIF Division III

State playoffs with a 90-61 blowout of Tulare Western. Guty Heredia leads

the Eagles with 23 points. The Eagles fall in the semifinals to Dos

Pueblos, 63-57. Matt Fuerbringer was the high-scorer for Estancia in that

game, with 15 points.

CdM’s boys basketball team also wins in the first round of the Division

III playoffs, 67-65 over San Diego Lincoln. John Paulsen scores 30 to

lead the Sea Kings. CdM falls in the semifinals to Servite, 41-39.

Costa Mesa’s girls basketball team continues its Cinderella season with a

44-42 triumph over Selma in the first round of the Division III playoffs.

Thuy Nguyen, Rachel Ward and Olivia DiCamilli score 14, 12 and 10 points,

respectively. The Mustangs lose in the semifinals to Palos Verdes, 71-45.

SCC’s men’s basketball team earned its first trip to the NAIA national

tournament with a 90-77 victory over Christian Heritage Terry Scruggs

explodes for the Vanguards with 22 points.

Costa Mesa’s baseball team slips by Newport Harbor, 5-4, in the first

round of the Newport Elks Tournament. Bob Porter drives in the winning

run and is the winning pitcher for Mesa.

The Sailors’ baseball team beats El Modena, 4-3, in their next tournament

game. Jason Farr drives in Newport’s winning run with a sacrifice fly.

Estancia’s baseball team gets its first win of the year with a 6-0

trouncing of Foothill. Cody Rodman pitches the shutout. Gary Burrows gets

two hits and two RBIs for the Eagles.
