YACHTS OF YESTERYEAR

This traditional Yawl was homeported in Balboa from 1931 to 1937. Frank

K. Eckley, commodore of Newport Harbor Yacht Club in 1935, kept this

Yacht moored in front of his home at 1316 E. Balboa Blvd.

Emerald was destined by J. Marroywall and built by the W.F. Stone and Son

boat-building company in Oakland in 1924. She was 50 feet, 6 inches long,

with a water line length of 35 feet, 6 inches. The beam was 14 feet with

a draft of 7 feet. Emerald was designed with a centerboard. However this

was replaced with a deep keel in 1929.

A full-time paid hand kept Emerald in top shape at all time. Emerald was

not a racing boat. However, she frequently was used as a committee boat

for NHYC races, which started and finished in the ocean, off of the

Balboa Pier.

After a long life of cruising, Emerald was scraped in 1966.
