Softball: Newport Harbor wins opener

COSTA MESA - Lauren Gallardo’s grand slam in the top of the sixth

inning sparked Newport Harbor High’s softball team to a, 11-3 comeback

win over Estancia in pool-play action at the Costa Mesa Tournament.

The grand slam led the Sailors to a seven-run sixth inning, followed by a

three-run seventh, turning a 3-1 deficit into a lopsided win.

Athena Vasquez had three hits, two runs scored and two RBIs, while

Lindsay Moore added two hits and a run scored.

The Sailors will play at Saddleback High in nonleague action on Tuesday

before resuming Costa Mesa Tournament action Wednesday at home against

Santa Ana.
