Ss. Simon & Jude girls win Diocesan title
The Ss. Simon & Jude girls A 7th-8th grade basketball team captured
the Diocese of Orange Large School Basketball championship last weekend
by defeating Holy Family School of Orange, 29-26, in the tournament
final.
The Rebels spotted Holy Family a 2-0 lead but never trailed after that.
They rolled out to a 22-7 halftime lead, with Jennifer Rogers hitting 7
of 7 from the free throw line and both Kimberly King and Aubrey
Bowermaster controlling the boards during the opening half.
Despite seeing Holy Family rally behind a man-to-man press in the second
half, Ss. Simon & Jude held on for the victory.
Rogers paced the Rebels with a game-high 15 points, and Karla Readshaw
added six.
Ss. Simon & Jude, which won four tournaments during a 25-3 season,
defeated St. Mary and All Angels (Aliso Niguel), St. Jeanne de Lestonnac
(Tustin), and St. John’s Episcopal (Santa Margarita) en route to the
tournament championship.
Other members of the Rebels include Megan Veneracion, Angela Ruiz,
Krystal Magdaleno, Brianna Thorpe, Laura Dzida, Nancy Girgis, and Meghan
Kamaka.
