CONFERENCE TO BE HELD ON SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITYThe National Conference for

Community and Justice is now accepting applications for its Knowledge and

Social Responsibility Program 2000 to be held at UC Irvine from July 30

to Aug. 8.

The free program is open to all Orange County high school students who

will graduate in 2001.

The program offers an intensive exploration of global and local social

issues in workshops and discussions led by community leaders from

business, government social services and academia.

Among the topics to be covered are technology, media, poverty, violence,

elections and prejudice.

Participants are selected on the basis of academics, extracurricular

activities and answers to essay questions on the application.

FOUR HUNTINGTON BEACH HIGH STUDENTS ARE MERIT FINALISTS

Four Huntington Beach High School students have been recognized as

National Merit Scholarship finalists. They are Alan Chin, Andy Jutas,

Jerry Lu and Kelly McClulloch.

The finalists were chosen based on their SAT scores.

EDISON NEEDS GRAD NIGHT HELP

Edison High School is asking for special contributions of merchandise or

gift certificates to be used as prizes for its Class of 2000 Grad Night.

Contributions are tax deductible.

Grad Night will be held June 15 at the Edison High School gym.

RUBY’S HELPS OCEAN VIEW HIGH WITH GRAD NIGHT

Ruby’s at the Pier is helping Ocean View High School raise funds for its

Grad Night 2000 event.

On April 3 and May 1, Ruby’s will donate 20% of its receipts from food

and nonalcoholic beverage sales to the event when accompanied with a Grad

Night flier.

MATHCOUNTS FOR TWO SCHOOLS

Two Huntington Beach City School District middle schools dominated the

recent countywide Mathcounts competition. Sowers Middle School placed

first and Dwyer Middle School placed second in the mathematics challenge.

Student teams from the two schools scored highest from among 19

participating schools in the regional competition at UC Irvine last

month. The two teams will now progress to the state contest, which will

be held Saturday.

Students with the top four scores and the top coach at the state level

will represent the state at the national finals.

TEACHER HONORED FOR HUMANITARIAN WORK

Huntington Beach High School teacher Rose Molina will be honored March 26

by the Orange County Human Relations Commission for her human rights’

work.

Molina has been a member of the Huntington Beach Human Relations Task

Force since its inception three years ago. Her committee of students and

liaisons has produced a number of events to encourage dialogue and

understanding among the city’s residents.

Molina is now working with the Education Outreach Committee to produce a

citywide diversity talent show to be held at the Huntington Beach Pier in

April.

The 29th anniversary awards banquet will take place at 5 p.m. in the

Garden Grove Community Center, 11300 Stanford Ave.

Cost for the event is $12, which includes dinner and entertainment.
