Edison seeking hoops coaches

Edison High announced Tuesday the resignation of both its girls and

boys varsity basketball coaches.

Dave White retired after the completion of the 1999-2000 season, which

ended earlier this month with a semifinal loss to Troy. The Chargers

finished the season 21-9 and won the Sunset League championship for the

second consecutive year.

Under White, Edison never missed the playoffs, went to the semifinals

three times, won a CIF Southern Section championship in 1987, and went

21-12 in postseason competition during that span.

White, who also is the school’s head football coach, said his resignation

was prompted by his desire to spend more time with his family and the

football program.

Corey Kelly coached Edison’s boys teams the past four years, posting a

career record of 44-54. His final team, the 1999-2000 squad, went 8-16

and finished last in the Sunset League. Kelly’s best season came in

1997-98, when the Chargers went 16-9, finished second in league play, and

reached the second round of the Southern Section playoffs.

Kelly has resigned in order to search for a teaching opportunities.

Edison Athletic Director Bruce Belcher is currently accepting resumes

from parties interested in filling either position. It is preferred,

Belcher said, that applicants have a minimum of two years varsity level,

or higher, coaching experience. Possible teaching positions include the

areas of Math and English. The deadline to submit an application is April

4. For more information, contact Belcher at 962-1356, ext. 303.
