Reds outlast Dodgers, 5-4

Two of Ocean View Little League’s top Majors Division teams went

head-to-head Saturday in a showdown that required nine innings to

determine a winner, and it was the Reds who came out on the plus side of

a 5-4 score.

The Reds had taken a 4-2 lead, but the Dodgers, who have played two, nine

inning games in the first three weeks of league play, tied the score in

the fourth inning on Riley Buccola’s RBI single. Buccola finished the day

with two hits and two RBI.

The Reds received strong pitching from Hank Conger (five shutout

innings), and Greg Gonzalez also threw four shutout innings up until the

ninth inning. The Dodgers’ Nick Bermel also made several key defensive

stops at the plate.

In other games:

Cardinals 9, Astros 0

Chris Palmer smacked a two-run home run in the second inning to complete

a nine run outburst to open the game by the Cardinals, Chris Rathkey

preserved the shutout with two key defensive plays in the outfield, and

pitchers Brett Sterbens, Michael Wegner, and Palmer combined for the

shutout. Dallas Walters had two hits for the Astros.

Mariners 3, Angels 1

Alex Van Arsdale (triple/double) keyed a three-run third inning by

stealing home after a lead-off triple, Andy Chersin (single/double) hit a

two-RBI single to cap the scoring, and Davey Hughey squelched an Angels

rally with a key double play in the fifth inning to lead the Mariners;

Michael Cherf had an RBI single and Scott Melchert doubled for the

Angels.

MINOR A DIVISIONPirates 11, Red Sox 7

Albert Breitwieser and Bill Marion each finished with two hits and each

had two-RBI hits in a seven run, seven hit fifth inning for the Pirates,

with Dnaiel Williams getting the pitching win.

Rangers 4, Tigers 3

In a well pitched game, Ranger pitchers Mickey Moses, Ryan Schulenburg,

and Kyle O’Bryan combined on a three hitter, both Tyler Geery and Eddie

Carey had RBI doubles, and Brian Benac keyed the defense for the Rangers;

Cole Tischer and Garrett Shinn turned in strong pitching performances for

the Tigers.

Reds 5, Brewers 4

Jeff Wallace produced a key RBI double during a fifth inning rally by the

Reds, MJ Forsberg singled and doubled, and Randy Guite had two hits and a

key stop in the outfield; Aaron Chatigny and Ryan Camire each had an RBI

single, Brian Conroy and Phillip Cobb each had two hits, and Ryan Siwieki

made a diving catch in the outfield for the Brewers.

MINOR B DIVISION

Reds 10, Rockies 10

The tie ballgame featured a nine strikeout performance by Ryan Vandenburg

(three innings), three hits by Derek Neugebauer, and a single and double

by BK Fernandez for the Reds, and Ryan Zaniboni had two hits and Brian

Wardell scored three runs for the Rockies.
