Noaki Schwartz / Daily Pilot

If this film was used by the Mexican tourism board, the country would be

overrun by visitors. “Bajo, California” is a visual dream, lifting the

most beautiful angles of the countryside to its best light. It is the

type of film where the story is shown rather than told.

The tale is about Damian, a tortured Laguna Beach artist who leaves his

pregnant wife to go in search of his grandmother’s grave. What he is

really running away from is the guilt he feels after hitting a pregnant

woman months earlier.

And so Damian goes on a long, purging journey in which he crosses paths

with various symbolic characters, creating some artistic offering at each

stop.

Finally, he reaches his grandmother’s village -- a small collection of

eccentric people who all have the same last name. It is here that he

finally stops running and finds out who he is. And, it is here that he

pays his penance.

* “Bajo, California -- The Limit of Time” screens at 6:15 p.m. today at the Edwards Island 7 Cinemas.
