Members of the Costa Mesa Kiwanis Club are gearing up for the annual

Orange County All-star Basketball games scheduled for April 15 at OCC.

The 23rd annual girls all-star game begins at 5 p.m. and the 35th annual

boys all-star game at 8 p.m.

Tom Lee, All-star Basketball committee chairman, said tickets are $6 for

students and $10 for adults and can be bought at door. “No more than two

players from any high school team can be on the All-star team,” said Lee,

adding that players from seasonal rivals will now play on the same team.

The basketball uniforms have been distributed to the high school stars,

team photos have been taken and each team has held six practices. On

April 9, the Kiwanis Club will host the basketball stars and their

families at the 35th annual All-star Basketball Banquet at the Costa Mesa

Holiday Inn to honor the outstanding student-athletes. Look in the sports

section of the Daily Pilot for team rosters and coaches and game results.

BOYS STATE: Tom Peter (Newport Harbor), Gregg Rausch (Estancia),

Lex Vassilakis (Costa Mesa) and Tim Reynolds (Corona del Mar) have been

selected to represent their respective schools in June at the 63rd annual

Boys State Program in Sacramento, said Jim Shaffer, chairman of the

selection committee of American Legion Post 291 in Newport Beach.

They will join with 1,000 boys from around the state at Cal State

Sacramento in setting up a state-level government and running it for one

week. Locally, 19 students applied for the positions available from the

schools and the selection process was an exercise in torture.

“All 19 were eminently qualified and they made an excellent appearance,

interview with poise and had enviable backgrounds in academics, social

and extracurricular activities,” said Joe Grimes, a selection committee

member. Maxon Smith served as the third committee member. High school

counselors and activity directors from the local schools aided the

committee. Bill Graichen, member of Post 291, is the state chairman of

Boys State.
