Byron W. Thompson’s “Stonebrook” has all the elements of a successful

film, but without the punch of superior acting.

It keeps the audience guessing, but doesn’t quite manage to captivate

that audience.

Brad Pitt wannabe Brad Rowe portrays Erik, a 23-year-old field hand

determined not to spend his life in the fields as his deceased father

did.

When a too-good-to-be-true free ride to an upscale college appears in his

mailbox, he takes off. Naturally, that falls through once he’s there, so

our hero is left desperate for money.

When Erik’s geeky roommate Cornelius, played by Seth Green, offers him a

way out, the story takes off. What appears to be a predictable story line

has a few surprising twists, making the intrigue a success.

Green’s performance as the wily roommate outshines Rowe in the lead role,

setting things off balance.

It was entertaining, while certainly not making anyone’s top 10 list.

* “Stonebrook” screens at 1:15 p.m. today at Edwards Island 7 Cinemas.
