COSTA MESA -- A motorist traveling eastbound in a blue pickup on Bay

Street between Newport and Harbor boulevards at sundown Sunday tagged a

gold Ford Tempo, which was exiting from a private driveway, forcing the

mid-size car into a line of parked cars, which in turn pinned a screaming

female pedestrian in between two cars.

The woman was transported to Western Medical Center in Santa Ana with

substantial injuries, according to Costa Mesa Sgt. Tim Schennum.

The woman driving the Tempo was transported to Hoag Hospital in Newport

Beach with complaints of pain to her back and neck.

The accident is under investigation, however, preliminary reports point

to the Tempo as the cause of the accident for failing to yield to the

truck, according to Schennum.

But eyewitnesses painted a different picture. According to residents the

speeding truck caused the accident.

“This is not a speed zone,” said Costa Mesa resident Mark Alison, whose

wife was driving the Tempo. “It’s not Daytona.”The driver of the truck

had no comment.Locals said people speed on Bay Street and a stronger law

enforcement presence is needed on the narrow stretch of road.”They need

radar,” said Bay Street resident Chris Fenenster. “They’ve got it all

over town. Why not on this street.”
