Swimming: Newport girls win Estancia Invitational

COSTA MESA - Newport Harbor High’s frosh-soph girls swim team

outdueled Millikan to capture the 14th annual Estancia Invitational

Saturday.

The Sailors’ Annie Wight and Jenna Murphy were both individual winners.

Newport also had a winner in its 400 freestyle relay squad of Murphy, Mai

Tajima, Paige Lansing and Ashley Pardee. Their time was 3:56.67.

Wight barely pulled out the 50-yard breaststroke by .04 seconds,

finishing with a time of 35.84. Murphy’s time 30.37 in the 50 backstroke

provided a slightly more comfortable margin of .28 seconds.

Newport won with team depth, placing seven individuals in the top three.

The 200 medley and freestyle relay teams both finished second.

Newport’s frosh-soph boys team was fourth. Nathan Weiner had the only

individual top three efforts for the Sailors. He was second in the 50

freestyle (24.05) and third in the 100 freestyle (55.44). The 200

freestyle relay squad of Weiner, Ryan Bean, Michael Vanderburg and Brent

Armstrong was third with a time of 1:42.21.

Estancia’s frosh-soph boys team was sixth. Alex Elmore won the

consolation finals in the 100 freestyle with a time of 55.26. Carl Newman

was ninth in the 50 free (26.23).

Costa Mesa’s frosh-soph girls team was eighth. Candice Carpenter had the

Mustangs’ best showing, seventh place in the girls 200 free. Her time was

2:22.45.
