Girls track and field: Sea Kings cruise

CORONA DEL MAR - Corona del Mar High’s girls cross country team

keeps plugging away.

The Sea Kings didn’t set any records, but they were more than fast enough

for an easy 91-26 triumph over visiting Estancia in a Pacific Cast League

dual meet Wednesday.

CdM (4-0, 3-0 in league) was led by a three-time winner in senior Kelly

Halley. She won the 100-meter with a time of 13.4, one tenth of a second

better then Estancia’s Jasmine Geider. Halley defeated Geider by a bigger

margin in the long jump, 15-6 to 13-8 1/2. Halley also took the triple

jump with a mark of 30-11.

“Halley won three events. She did a great job today,” CdM Coach Bill

Sumner said.

Three days before the Arcadia Invitational, where she will face some of

the nation’s best high school runners, CdM’s Liz Morse turned in a

comfortable win in the 800. Her time of 2:16.4 was six seconds short of

her mark of this year’s fastest time in Orange County, which she set with

a 2:10.09. But Morse still finished well ahead of any pursuers.

“Liz isn’t racing against people anymore,” Sumner said. “She’s only

racing against times. If she ran a 2:05 but finished second, I’m sure she

would be happy.”

The distance runners did well for both CdM and Estancia (1-3, 1-2). Jenny Cummins, who was 10th in the CIF Division IV state cross country meet,

took the 400 in 1:01.8. In the 1,600, CdM’s Diana Hossfeld held off

Estancia’s Liz Huipe. Hossfeld’s time was 5:22.1 while Huipe, who

finished ninth in the CIF Division IV state meet in cross country, set a

personal record with a 5:26.5.

“Diana has really come on for us lately,” Sumner said.

Huipe also finished second in the 3,200 with a solid time of 12:05.9,

only to be topped by CdM’s Season Meservey, who turned in a blistering

11:49.3.

The closest race of the day came in the 200, where the top three

finishers came in a virtual tie. Geider won with a time of 28.2. Her

sister, Hanni Geider, and CdM’s Becky Cummins tied in 28.5. Both Geiders

set a PR in that race.

CdM’s Jaycee Mahler was victorious in both hurdles events. She won the

100 low hurdles in 18.3. As one of only two competitors, she won the 300

low hurdles in 50.7.

In the field events, the Sea Kings’ Krisserin Canary was first among two

competitors by reaching nine feet in the pole vault. CdM Allison Brawner

won the high jump in 5-2. Estancia got two wins from Violetta Vega, who

had a big throw in the shot put (27-4 1/2). She won the discus with a

throw of 78-11.

“We had a tough opponent against CdM today,” Estancia Coach Joan Carlisle

said. “But it’s a testament to our girls that they didn’t give up. They

kept trying.”
