IRVINE - Any time the defensive miscues outnumber the hits, you

know you’re in for a long day.

For Newport Harbor High’s baseball team, that was the case in Tuesday’s

8-3 Sea View League loss to host Irvine.

The Sailors (2-12, 1-9 in league) managed only one hit in the game, while

committing two errors.

“The Irvine pitcher was ahead of us all day today,” Sailors Coach Jim

Kiefer said. “He threw strikes and our defense made a couple of errors,

which put us behind early.”

Senior Justin Jacobs went the distance, allowing four earned runs with

five strikouts and only two walks.

“He threw the ball pretty well for us today,” Kiefer said. “He didn’t

much help from the offense.”

Jacobs also had the Sailors’ lone hit, a double down the left-field line,

driving in Chris Ward with the first of three sixth-inning runs.

After Alan Lane reached on a Vaquero error, Jacobs scored when Miguel

Sandoval’s sharp ground ball was bobbled by Irvine’s shortstop.

Irvine tried to pick Lane off of third base, but the ball was thrown

away, allowing Lane to score.

For the Vaqueros (12-3, 9-1), Terry Parker went 2 for 2 with a triple,

home run and four RBIs.

Pitcher Derrek Smith went the distance, striking out four to earn the

win.

Irvine’s Alex Park, who has a five-game hitting streak, had two hits and

a stolen with two runs scored.

Newport will travel to Laguna Hills to take on the Hawks Thursday at 3:15

p.m.
