LETTER OF THE WEEK

Fountain Valley

I was extremely disheartened when I read about those four members on the

Huntington Beach Planning Commission [“Planning Commission vetoes

low-income housing,” March 16] who chose to veto the low-income housing

at Beach Boulevard and Ellis Avenue because a few NIMBYs showed up to

protest.

Where is their common sense? Where is their compassion? Where is their

backbone?

Don’t they realize that good, honest, hard-working citizens such as

nurses, teachers, students and the elderly are the majority of those who

would benefit from this type of single-resident occupancy housing?

Of course, there is always the possibility that a couple of people

addicted to drugs (maybe because of their life situation and very low

income) might slip in and maybe even begin to turn their lives around

because of such an opportunity.

Wouldn’t it be terrific if these NIMBYs and Commissioner Connie Mandic

(and the other three who chose to veto) would focus on the positive

majority and maybe give a little boost to a couple of others in the

process? We as a community, county, state and country need to provide

housing for those with low to very low incomes... and not just

single-resident occupancy housing, but family housing as well.So many

people today are more interested in how much money they are making and

how much their property is worth than in helping to do their part to

ensure that those less fortunate have decent, affordable housing. How

selfish. How ashamed you should be.Thank you, Chairman Gerald Chapman and

Commissioners Ed Kearns and Tom Livengood for voting yes! You can look

proudly at the man in the looking glass.
