Girls track and field: CdM rolls past University

IRVINE - There’s a saying that Corona del Mar High track and field

coach Bill Sumner loves to bring up, which is, “Fear no one, but respect

everyone.” That catchy sentence really clicked for Season Meservey in

Thursday’s 80.5-55.5 win over host University.

The Sea Kings’ sophomore took on some of the top runners in the

3,200-meter run and ran away with a top mark of 11:48.0.

“She beat three of the county’s top two-miler runners today,” Sumner

said. “That’s big, man.”

Meservey’s time was a personal-best time for this year, winning the race

by nine seconds.

Senior Liz Morse posted a top time of 2:20.0 in the 800 before taking

first with a 25.72 in the 200, handling the dirt track with relative

ease.

“Some of the runners came in here and saw the dirt track and started to

whine and complain,” Sumner said. “They’ve got to realize that their

competition is also running on the dirt. That’s what you have to worry

about. Step it up and deal with it.”

Jaycee Mahler handled the hurdles, taking top spot in both the 100 lows

(17.6) as well as the 300 lows (49.7).

Sumner was happy with the effort put forth by junior Diana Hossfeld, who

won the 1,600 (5:22.0) and was third in the 800 (2:30.0) and the 3,200

(12:04).

“She really ran well for us today,” Sumner said. “She had great focus and

did what she had to do.”

Other stellar times for CdM (5-0, 4-0 in league) include a first-place

for Jenny Cummins in the 400 (1:01.0) and two second-place finishes for

freshman Becky Cummins in the 400 (1:03.0) and 200 (27.42).

In the field events, sophomore Krisserin Canary posted wins in the triple

jump (32-10) and pole vault (8-0), while Kelly Halley was tops in the

long jump (15-4).

“Overall, I think the girls battled hard out there,” Sumner said. “It

wasn’t exactly pretty out there, but when you go up against a school of

this size, you better be ready to compete out there.”

After dropping the baton in the 400 relay early in the meet, the 1,600

relay team of Becky Cummins, Halley, Karolina Libuda and Liz Morse came

through with a winning time of 4:23.0.

The Orange County Championships on Saturday at 8:30 a.m. at Trabuco Hills

High are next on the Sea Kings’ list of things to do.

Following spring break, the Sea Kings will compete against Costa Mesa to

resume PCL competition.
