Five years ago

Newport Harbor High’s girls track and field team sends seven athletes to

the CIF Southern Section Division II finals. Cara Heads, Laura Wilson and

Lia Rousset qualify in the weight throwing events, Jamie Swarberg in the

1,600-meter run, M.E. Clayton in the 100 low hurdles, Tina Bowman in the

high jump and Mandy Clayton in the triple jump.

Corona del Mar’s Tracy Clark qualifies in the 3,200 for the CIF Division

II girls track and field finals.

Newport Harbor’s Shahram DeZahd is the only area athlete to qualify for

the CIF Division II boys finals. He is the ninth seed in the 1,600.

Costa Mesa’s baseball team falls to powerful Irvine, 3-0, in the first

round of the CIF Division III playoffs. Matt Broesamle gets the Mustangs’

lone hit. Jeremy Starns pitches a solid complete game for Mesa.

CdM’s Jerome Poyyak wins the CIF individual boys badminton championship

with a 13-13 (5-1), 11-15, 15-4 victory over Ed Setauto of Katella.

Costa Mesa’s James Comfort finishes fourth in the 100-yard backstroke in

the CIF Division II championships. He’s places sixth in the 100

freestyle.

CdM’s boys tennis team defeats Trabuco Hills, 11-7 in the first round of

the CIF Division I playoffs. The doubles squad of James Stauffer and

David Eruchbom sweeps. The Sea Kings whip South Torrance, 14-4, in the

second round.

Ten years ago

Estancia’s baseball team defeats CdM in consecutive games to take third

place and the final guaranteed CIF Division 3-A playoff spot in the Sea

View League. In the first game, the Eagles shut out the Sea Kings, 3-0,

behind Greg Brannis. CdM’s Rees Thorkelson only gives up four hits.

In the second game, Estancia pounds CdM, 10-2. Paul McDaniels paces the

Eagles with two hits, including a home run.

Newport Harbor’s baseball team qualifies for the CIF Division 3-A

playoffs. The Sailors end the season with a 4-1 win over University, with

Matt Palaffari getting out of a seventh inning bases loaded jam for a

save. They close out the season with an 8-3 victory over the Trojans.

CdM’s boys volleyball team gets past Santa Monica, 15-10, 15-11, 13-15,

15-12 in the first round of the CIF Division 4-A playoffs. Doug Hesse

gets 12 kills for CdM.

Behind setter Russell Gans, Newport Harbor’s boys volleyball team defeats

El Toro in the wild card and Leuzinger in the first round in the CIF

Division 4-A playoffs.

CdM’s girls track and field team takes its sixth consecutive Sea View

League championship, despite only two individual wins. Jill Young

accounts for both CdM victories, in the 400 run and 300 low hurdles.

Costa Mesa’s Katy Jaglowski qualifies for the CIF Division 2-A finals in

the shot put and discus.

Orange Coast College’s women’s swim team captures its sixth state crown

in eight years. Marna Clark’s victory in the 100 backstroke gives the

Pirates timely points.
