Chatman soaring with the Eagles

Understatement of the new millennium: Charles Chatman likes the

pitching of the Golden State Athletic Conference.

The Concordia University outfielder and former Costa Mesa High standout

is putting a real hurt on the baseball this season.

Chatman is currently leading the conference with a .386 batting average,

a .795 slugging percentage, 15 home runs, 53 runs scored, 51 RBIs, six

triples and 18 stolen bases.

No player in the history of the GSAC has ever led the conference in home

runs and stolen bases; a feat that is very much in Chatman’s grasp.

His teammate at Concordia, Matt Broesamle (Costa Mesa High) has been

holding his own on the mound for the Eagles.

Broesamle is 6-4 with three complete games and a 5.63 REA. In 83 1/3

innings of work, he has struck out 53, while walking only 21.

From the annals of Corona del Mar, there is Ryan Achterberg, who is now

playing at Princeton University.

Achterberg, a sophomore outfielder for the Tigers, is hitting .288 (19

for 66) in 33 games (19 starts). He has nine run scored, two doubles and

three RBIs, helping Princeton to the top of the Ivy League’s Gehrig

Division standings.

Despite being a freshman playing in one of the toughest conference in all

of NCAA Division I, former Newport Harbor High catcher Charlie Waite is

soaking up the atmosphere for the University of Mississippi.

In limited action for Ole Miss, Waite has played in nine games, started

in three, has gone 2 for 11 with a double, two runs scored and one RBI

for the Bulldogs.

The Orange Coast College men’s volleyball team has reached the playoffs,

thanks to some aerial dominance from sophomore middle blocker Dave Moser.

The 6-foot-5 Moser leads the Orange Empire Conference with 108 blocks or

2.4 blocks per game.

To show his all-around play, Moser is second in the OEC with 5.1 kills

per game and 17 aces. His 231 kills ranks him sixth in the OEC, while his

.462 attack percentage is ranked fifth.

The Orange Coast College men’s crew team will compete in its final local

competition as the Pirates host the Newport Regatta Sunday at 8 a.m.

Following Sunday’s action, the Pirates will go to Worcester, Mass. May 14

for the Champion International Collegiate Regatta, followed by the

Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championship at Cherry Hill, N.J. June

1-3.
