Boys track and field: Estancia goes the distance

IRVINE - While University High’s boys track and field team

certainly have more athletes, Estancia showed that it can stretch its

personnel out a little further Wednesday in a Pacific Coast League dual

meet with the host Trojans.

The Eagles won two of the three distance events. Estancia’s distance

runners and jumper Travis Chandler accounted for most of its points in a

102-33 victory by the Trojans (2-2 in league).

Estancia freshman Humberto Rojas had the biggest win on the boys side. He

clocked in at 11:12, over half a minute better than the second-place

finisher. His biggest challenge came from Estancia’s junior varsity team,

which had two runners finish ahead of Uni’s top varsity finisher and ran

at Rojas’ heel for most of the race.

Sophomore Mike Casillas won the 1,600 in 4:53, and Abe Inouye placed

third (5:22). In the 800, Luis Segoviano was locked in a rough battle

with Uni’s Cole Catchell. Both of them were in a dead heat for the first

lap, but Catchell opened up some room down the stretch to win in 2:08.

Segoviano was second in 2:01, while Estancia’s Jordan Fissel came in

third at 2:21.

Chandler provided two victories for the Eagles (0-4) in the long jump

(19-1/2) and triple jump (41-4). But his best mark came in the high jump,

where he tied a personal record with a leap of 6-2. But he was outdueled

by two inches as Uni’s Jeb Ballard went 6-4 to win the event.

Estancia’s Rolando Vivar was second in the 200 with a time of 25.32. The

Eagles had a second- and third-place finish in the discus. Bobby Arroyo

was the runner-up (115-2 1/2), while Bobby Aguilera was third (112-8).
