Boys track and field: Sailors close in on Sea View crown

ALISO VIEJO - At this point, the Newport Harbor High boys track and

field team doesn’t want to jinx it. But after completing a perfect Sea

View League dual-meet season Wednesday with an 83-53 win at Aliso Niguel,

Coach Bim Barry’s Sailors are in position to claim the school’s first

league crown since 1979.

The Sailors (5-0, 4-0 in league and ranked No. 3 in Orange County), in

fact, would have to finish third at next week’s league finals to be

denied their first banner since conquering the Sunset League, well before

this season’s athletes were born.

“And we’re an even better invitational team than we are a dual-meet

team,” said Barry, whose squad will approach Monday’s league

preliminaries at Irvine High at full strength. The finals are set for

Thursday at Irvine.

The strongest contibutors Wednesday were familiar mainstays.

UCLA-bound senior Trevor Jones won the 200 meters (22.7), the 400 (49.0)

and anchored the winning 400 relay. His wins in the 200 and 400 were

notable, because he easily defeated Aliso’s Chris Bernard, who came in

with the fourth-fastest 400 time among county runners. Jones ranked No.

3.

Junior John Peschelt won the 800 (2:03), the high jump (6-0) and anchored

the victorious 1,600 relay.

Senior Doug Dukes won the 1,600 (4:34), was second in the 800 and was on

the winning 1,600 relay to highlight additional Harbor heroes.

Newport sophomore David Spenger was second in the high jump and long

jump, third in the triple jump and ran on the 400 relay, while senior

teammate Ryan Brill was second in the triple jump (with a personal-best

mark of 42-7), third in the long jump, and also chipped in on the 400

relay.

Junior Sean Tupy and junior Dan Moyer finished 2-3 in both hurdles races

and both ran on the 1,600 relay.

Aliso fell to 2-3-1, 0-3-1.
